Recovery Tip: What is the best sleeping position?

What Is the Best Sleeping Position? Here's What Your Body Really Needs

We spend roughly one-third of our lives asleep, yet many of us wake up with stiff necks, aching backs, or sore shoulders. It's natural to wonder whether there's one "perfect" sleeping position that will prevent pain and improve recovery.

The answer? Not exactly.

The best sleeping position isn't the same for everyone. Instead of trying to force yourself into one specific position, the real goal is maintaining neutral spinal alignment throughout the night.

What Is Neutral Spinal Alignment?

Neutral spinal alignment means keeping your head, neck, shoulders, spine, and hips in a relaxed, natural position while you sleep. When your body is properly supported, your muscles, ligaments, and spinal discs aren't forced to work overtime to compensate for awkward positions.

This can help:

  • Reduce unnecessary stress on your joints and spine.

  • Minimize muscle tension and stiffness.

  • Improve comfort throughout the night.

  • Help you wake up feeling more refreshed instead of sore.

Think of it this way: your spine should stay as close as possible to the position it naturally holds when you're standing with good posture.

There's No "One-Size-Fits-All" Sleeping Position

Everyone has different body types, injuries, mobility, and comfort preferences. That's why the best sleeping position is the one that allows your spine to stay in a neutral, supported position.

Here's how to achieve that based on how you naturally sleep.

If You're a Side Sleeper

Side sleeping is one of the most common—and often one of the most comfortable—positions.

To improve alignment:

  • Choose a pillow that fills the space between your head and shoulder so your neck stays straight.

  • Place a pillow between your knees to keep your hips level and reduce twisting through your lower back.

  • Keep your shoulders stacked rather than rolling forward.

If You're a Back Sleeper

Sleeping on your back can distribute pressure evenly across your body when done correctly.

For better support:

  • Use a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck without pushing your head too far forward.

  • Place a small pillow under your knees to reduce stress on your lower back.

  • Avoid pillows that elevate your head excessively.

If You're a Stomach Sleeper

Stomach sleeping isn't always ideal because it often requires turning your head to one side for long periods, which can place extra stress on your neck and lower back.

If you prefer sleeping this way:

  • Use a very thin pillow—or no pillow under your head if comfortable.

  • Place a pillow under your hips or pelvis to reduce strain on your lower back.

  • If you're experiencing persistent neck or back pain, gradually transitioning to side sleeping may help.

Your Pillow Matters More Than You Think

A good pillow should support your head and neck so they stay aligned with the rest of your spine.

Rather than buying the most expensive pillow on the market, choose one that suits:

  • Your preferred sleeping position.

  • Your shoulder width.

  • Your body size.

  • Your mattress firmness.

The "best" pillow is simply the one that keeps your neck in a comfortable, neutral position.

Waking Up Sore Every Morning Isn't Normal

Occasional stiffness can happen after a long day or a poor night's sleep. But if you're consistently waking up with neck pain, headaches, shoulder discomfort, or back pain, your sleeping position may only be part of the problem.

Underlying issues such as muscle imbalances, joint restrictions, previous injuries, or poor movement patterns during the day can all contribute to ongoing pain.

We Can Help
